The pachysandra isn’t a showy plant, but these buds will produce small fragrant white flowers in the spring. And for now, they produce something that resembles a flower. I have more of these plants than I should, but they serve the practical purpose of preventing soil erosion.

Have a great weekend.

I took these pictures a few days ago. It was my first walk in the woods for at least a week, and it felt restorative. Much needed. As I walked, I thought to myself, this is what it looks like out here in January. It took me awhile to step back mentally and realize we’re still in December. There were folks walking dogs, a few pushing babies in strollers, and a couple of runners. One bird chirping, and a woodpecker somewhere in the distance. Mostly, it was quiet, a welcome respite. The late afternoon sun made its way through leafless trees to set the icy patches and partially frozen creek aglow. These left-over florets were the closest I could find to something resembling a flower, and they were still standing, at the edge of a large icy area, which you can see as the grayish background in the photos and is a non-navigable swampy bit of brush in warmer months.

But we are here, all of us, at the cold end of this year, 2022. Happy new year, everyone. I hope this coming year will be terrific for you and will bring us all hope and peace and gentle, kindly times.

A flower for your friday, and a happy Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. Simple, for those who are not hosting. A wonderful meal, a time to break bread with the folks we love best. My best, softest, remembrance of Thanksgiving, is a look out the kitchen window as my mom washed and I dried dishes, after dinner, after dark. The road’s blanketed in the first heavy snow, under the streetlights, and the houses across the street covered in snow.

Best to you all.

On a sunny, warm, November afternoon, I can’t ignore the morning glory’s fresh periwinkle bloom.

Tomorrow is Veterans Day, and I want to voice my gratitude to all our veterans for the freedoms we enjoy every day. Have a great weekend everyone.
